New Year's Eve in Croatia: Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik?

For a midnight with fireworks over the sea, pick Split: on 31 December 2025 the Riva had a main stage, a second stage in a park, fireworks at midnight and 190 drones. For one square and a rock band, pick Zagreb. For a walled old town and a headliner who’s already announced, pick Dubrovnik: the mayor said in July 2026 that the band Plavi orkestar will play on Stradun.

None of the three has published a full programme for 31 December 2026 yet, and that’s normal for the first half of October. What you can use now is what each city did last New Year’s Eve, which acts have been named, and which flights actually land before the night.

What each city did on 31 December 2025

Those are the reports from 1 January 2026 by Croatia Week, Index.hr and the national news agency Hina. Treat the line-ups as a pattern, not a promise: each city books a new set of performers every year. The reports we read describe open-air programmes on public squares and don’t give a ticket price or entry rules, so confirm in the city’s own announcement in December whether any barrier, bag check or time limit applies. A programme that starts at 19:30 can mean a long evening in cold air, and December on the coast is not beach weather: dress for standing still.

Zagreb: one stage, and the Advent sites around it

The City of Zagreb and the Zagreb Tourist Board organise the main-square programme, and the night is built as a concert that starts early, at 19:30, and climbs to a headliner at 23:30. Index.hr noted that New Year’s Eve was also marked at the Advent sites: Zrinjevac, the ice rink on King Tomislav Square, where you could literally skate into the new year, and European Square, where the British band The Brand New Heavies played and carried on after midnight.

That’s Zagreb’s advantage over the coast: Advent Zagreb runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, so it’s still open on the night and you can pair the square with a quieter evening at one of the other sites. Split: the Riva as an open-air club

Split’s version has the most moving parts. In 2025 the Riva carried the main stage, with Baby Lasagna first and then Željko Bebek. At midnight the city let off fireworks and flew a drone choreography, then handed the stage to an electronic duo for the early hours. A second stage in Perivoj Roberta Visianija offered a funk band and then DJs, so the night had a second, smaller stage.

If you’re staying a few days, remember the Split Advent dates: the city’s Advent runs from 27 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, and the tourist board’s public call for the ice rink in Strossmayer park sets its hours at 09:00-22:00 on weekdays, so unless holiday hours are announced, the rink is a daytime option on Friday 1 January too. Dubrovnik: a headliner on Stradun and a short list of open hotels

Dubrovnik’s constraint is beds, not stages. For the 2025/26 festival the tourist board said at least six hotels would be open and 13 for New Year’s Eve, so check that your hotel is one of them before you pay a deposit. In 2025 the main night was Dino Merlin on Stradun with midnight fireworks; there was a children’s reception, Petar Grašo on Stradun on 1 January and a capella singers on 2 January.

For the 2027 edition the city has announced Plavi orkestar and renamed the festival Advent u Gradu. For clubs, Culture Club Revelin’s own contact page gives Friday and Saturday nights from 13 October to 30 April: 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, so the club’s standing winter schedule doesn’t include the night itself. Rijeka, Osijek and Hvar, if the big three are booked

Two other cities put on open-air nights in 2025/26. Rijeka held a “Big CroDance Party” on the Korzo with 1990s and early-2000s dance hits, performed by Alka Vuica, Indira Levak, Senna M, Simplicia, ET and Ilan Kabiljo. Osijek’s celebration filled Trg Vatroslava Lisinskog, with Miroslav Škoro as the star; earlier in the day there was a children’s programme in the Tvrđa fortress, and the city laid on free tram and bus transport so people could get home safely. Hvar is the island many people picture for the night. The town’s decision on catering hours lets a venue ask the mayor for different hours for New Year’s Eve, at least seven days ahead, and lets the mayor set different hours for all bars and restaurants during the Christmas and New Year events, so a late night there depends on such a decision or each venue’s own announcement, not on a town programme we could find. Which flights land before the night

Croatia Airlines’ winter timetable is in flights from London to Split; here’s what it means for this night.

New Year’s Eve 2026 is a Thursday. On Croatia Airlines’ London page, Heathrow-Split is listed on Saturdays from 31 October 2026 to 2 January 2027, so the last one before the night is Saturday 26 December; the next, 2 January, lands after it. Heathrow-Zagreb runs year-round on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Dubrovnik is via Zagreb, so a Zagreb arrival on Wednesday 30 December works for the capital and as a connection south. The timetable is subject to change, so re-check it before you pay; the guide linked above covers the other airlines.

Getting home after midnight

Plan the way back before you buy anything, because none of the three transport operators had published a New Year’s timetable on 10 October 2026. The normal Libertas line 6 from Pile in Dubrovnik leaves at 01:15 for the last time on an ordinary day, and the operator says its timetable can change without notice, so don’t count on it for the night. In Osijek the 2025/26 report mentioned free tram and bus journeys home, which shows cities sometimes lay on extra service, but when we checked, no operator in Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik had announced extra service for 2026/27.
