Hvar Nightlife: Bars Until 2am, Beach Music Off at Midnight
Hvar nightlife by the town's own rules: Riva bars to 02:00, outdoor music off at midnight, Carpe Diem after-beach 16:00-24:00, taxi boats, the last boat.
Hvar’s reputation is a late-night one; its rulebook isn’t. Under the town’s own decision on opening hours, bars on the Riva and the main square can stay open until 02:00, the streets behind them until 01:00, and on the Pakleni Islands the after-beach at Carpe Diem runs 16:00-24:00 with open-air music that must stop at midnight. On 10 October 2026 the club’s own site said it didn’t know whether its night party would open at all.
That changes how you plan a night here: it’s an early-evening island that moves into town for the last hours. Below is what each place publishes, what the city allows, and how you get home.
The rulebook in one table
The City of Hvar’s decision on catering hours (council session of 10 July 2018, still listed among its current acts) divides the town into four zones. The hours below are for restaurants and bars, which includes beach bars.
| Zone | Where | Open until | Music |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | main square (Trg sv. Stjepana), Riva and Fabrika waterfront, parts of the lanes up to the town gate | 02:00 | within the noise rules |
| II | the rest of the old town, Milna, the promenades, the inhabited part of the Pakleni Islands | 01:00 | indoors until 24:00 |
| III and IV | everywhere else in the town and its territory (venues outside settlements, at least 2 km from them, may open round the clock) | 24:00 | within the noise rules |
| Night clubs | any zone, if licensed as a night club | 21:00-06:00, indoors only | within the noise rules |
The decision also lets the mayor move the hours both ways. The mayor can order a venue to close up to two hours earlier, for one to six months, if inspectors or police recorded violations in the previous 12 months. And the mayor can extend hours for set occasions: in July 2026 a conclusion extended hours on certain nights for the football World Cup, with the reminder that public order and noise rules still apply. For one-off occasions such as New Year’s Eve, a venue can ask the mayor for different hours, at least seven days before the event.
The speakers question is separate. The town’s decision on leased public surfaces doesn’t allow speakers or microphones on them, and the council asked in August 2024 for that to be enforced, so a terrace on the Riva isn’t supposed to be a sound system.
Hvar Town: a lounge bar that asks for 23+ and a beach bar that shuts at ten
Carpe Diem Bar is the Hvar Town lounge that shares its name with the beach club. Its own Q&A page says it’s open every day of the season from 09:00 to 02:00, runs a 1+1 cocktail happy hour from 12:00 to 21:00, has no entrance fee, sets a 23+ age limit, and asks for a “chic and sophisticated” dress code: beach clothes, tank tops and flip-flops are not allowed. It’s a lounge bar, not a night club, and its 02:00 close is the latest the zone table above allows an ordinary bar; night clubs and night bars are a separate category, covered below.
Hula Hula sits on the Petričevo promenade and publishes 09:00-22:00 every day in season. Sunbeds on its deck cost €20 per person (about £17 / $22), including an umbrella and food and drink service, and the site takes booking inquiries rather than confirmed reservations. It’s a sunset place that closes at 22:00, so for the later hours you walk into town.
For the rest of the island’s bases and the quieter towns, the Hvar travel guide has the sights and the Hvar stay guide compares Hvar Town, Stari Grad and Jelsa.
Pakleni Islands: after-beach until midnight, and a night party that may not exist
Carpe Diem Beach is on Stipanska, one of the Pakleni Islands, a boat ride from town. Its official site publishes the programme in three parts:
- Day: sunbeds, restaurant and sushi.
- After beach: every day 16:00 to 24:00 from 5 June to 14 September, free entrance. The page doesn’t print a year and the site says it is closed until next summer, so treat these as the 2026 pattern, not the 2027 calendar.
- Night party: no programme. The page says the club has no further details on “the opening of our night program, including whether it will open at all, as we await decisions from the local government”.
The city’s position, as reported by Index.hr on 23 July 2026, is that it hasn’t approved evening and night parties at Stipanska for 2026, that restaurants and bars may work until 24:00 and that music outdoors may be played until midnight at most, within permitted noise levels. The county registry lists a buffet (2019) and a beach bar (2023) at the site, neither of which is legally a night club. The same report said the venue’s night programmes were stopped in 2024 after the club said the noise limits no longer allowed them. It also said, citing Dalmatinski portal, that social-media videos in July 2026 showed evening parties with DJs and loud sound at the beach again, although the venue’s legal status hadn’t changed and no noise measurement had been made there that year. The decision doesn’t name Stipanska, and the city’s figure for it, 24:00, is the zone III and IV limit, so read the 01:00 in the table as the limit for the inhabited part of the islands and the city’s 24:00 as the one that applies at this beach.
Getting there: the taxi boats leave from the quay in front of Mlinar bakery in Hvar Town. The club’s Q&A page gives €10 per person (about £8.50 / $11) for a return ticket, boats every 20 minutes from town and a return every full hour from the island. The ticket is for both ways, so the last boat is the one that matters: ask the boat captain for the exact time of the last return before you step off.
What the town can fine you for
The town’s rules on dress and behaviour are in its decision on communal order. Article 185 bans walking undressed, partly dressed or in swimwear in zones marked with signs; the minimum is shorts or a skirt below, and a shirt or T-shirt (with or without straps) above. Article 186 deals separately with the shore and beaches.
The decision sets money fines for breaking article 185 and article 184, which bans drinking alcohol outside licensed terraces and lying or sleeping on benches in the marked zone; the beach rule in article 186 isn’t on the fines list. The consolidated text on the town’s website still prints the fines in kuna: 500 to 2,000 kn for private persons, which at the fixed rate is roughly €66 to €265. Press reports have quoted much higher figures; we couldn’t tie them to a published decision, so check the current gazette before you rely on any number. In August 2024 the town council asked the communal police and sanitary inspector to enforce the existing rules on speakers and noise, and described a turn “from the proclaimed party tourism” towards sustainable tourism.
After 02:00, and what the rules leave open
In the town zones, restaurants and bars close by 02:00 at the latest under the decision; only venues licensed as a night club, night bar or disco club have hours that run later, 21:00 to 06:00, indoors only. None of the venues above is one: the lounge bar closes at 02:00, the beach bar at 22:00, and Carpe Diem Beach’s after-beach at 24:00. Third-party nightlife guides name a few clubs in town, but we found no operator page that publishes a club’s hours or entry rules, so we don’t quote any. Check a club’s own page or account for the night before you plan past 02:00.
Getting back, and where to sleep
From Hvar Town’s bars you can walk to a bed in town. If your bed is in Split, the night ends early: on the Kapetan Luka (Krilo) timetable for summer 2026, the sixth and last sailing left Hvar for Split at 19:15 between 1 May and 20 September, at €25 each way. Other operators run their own timetables and the 2027 ones aren’t published yet, so read the one you’ve booked. In practice an evening on Hvar means a bed on Hvar, and that’s where the Hvar stay guide helps: it compares Hvar Town with Stari Grad and Jelsa for people who want the town in the day and quiet at night.
If your plan is a night in Split instead, the clubs, the palace bars and the beachfront are in Split nightlife, which also has a short section on Split versus Hvar.
What we couldn’t confirm
The summer 2027 timetables and Carpe Diem’s 2027 programme aren’t published. Party boats are run by agencies and we found no operator page that gives a departure time, a return time and a price in one place, so we don’t quote one. And Hvar’s rules sit in several decisions, so before you travel, read the town’s own list of current acts on hvar.hr.
Opening hours, prices, timetables and seasonal services change through the year - the figures here are planning estimates, not quotes. Confirm current details with the operators and official sources before you go.
