Sea Kayaking in Dubrovnik: Tours, Routes & What It Costs
Guided sea kayaking from Pile bay, €35-45 on the operators' own sites in October 2026: routes, the Lokrum ticket, age rules, refunds.
The guided half-day sea-kayaking tours in Dubrovnik start from the small bay at Pile, just outside the western gate, and in October 2026 DSK and Adventure Dalmatia list €35 to €45 on their own sites for two to three hours on the water; DSK says outright that it’s per person. What sits next to that price matters as much: the route, the age limits, the refund rules and the umbrella you need to find.
Pile bay is crowded with kayak stands, so the first job is finding your operator’s umbrella: orange for DSK, green for Adventure Dubrovnik. The second surprise is the €30 Lokrum ticket, which the tour prices don’t include.
Three operators at Pile bay, side by side
Three companies run their own booking sites for the Pile bay tours, and the table sets them next to each other. Only DSK states the price unit as “per person”; the other two give the figure without one, so it’s worth confirming when you book.
| Operator | Tour | Length | Route | Price | Wine |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DSK | Daytime | 2 h | about 4 km | €35 | no |
| DSK | Sunset | 2 h | about 4 km | €40 | glass |
| DSK | Extended sunset | 3 h | about 7 km | €45 | glass |
| Adventure Dalmatia | Daytime | 2 h | 4-5 km | €40 | no |
| Adventure Dalmatia | Sunset | 2 h | 4-5 km | €45 | 0.2 l |
| Adventure Dubrovnik | Daytime | 2.5-3 h | not printed | from €30 | no |
| Adventure Dubrovnik | Sunset | about 2.5 h | not printed | from €40 | glass |
The last two rows need a warning. Adventure Dubrovnik dated its prices 10 September 2026, and on 13 October its site carried a banner saying the company was on hiatus and not accepting bookings. Read its row as the last published price, not as an offer you can book. And none of the three sites prints an end-of-season date, so for late October and November the only reliable answer is a message to the operator.
For readers paying in pounds or dollars, DSK’s three prices come to about £30, £34 and £38, or $39, $45 and $51, at the ECB rate of 2 October 2026.
From the bay to the cave and back along the walls
Every operator sells nearly the same route. You launch in Pile bay, paddle along the city walls and the shore of Lokrum, then stop at Betina cave, a small beach that Adventure Dubrovnik says you can reach only by kayak or small vessel. You swim or snorkel there and turn for home. DSK sums the outing up in one sentence: past Lokrum, a snorkelling stop at the cave, and back along the walls.
The order changes with the tour. Adventure Dalmatia’s sunset version goes under the walls first, then to the cave, and turns for home with the sunset toward the Elaphite islands. Adventure Dubrovnik’s sunset tour crosses the short channel toward the mainland for a 30-minute break out of the kayak at the cave, then paddles back toward the Old Town as the sun goes down.
What you get from the water is the outer face of the wall, which the city walls walk can’t give you, because up there you’re standing on top of it. The small bay below Fort Lovrijenac, where the Game of Thrones locations put the Blackwater waterfront, is the first thing you paddle out of.
The arithmetic of the three-hour sunset
Run DSK’s three prices through hours and kilometres and the middle one is the odd one out.
- Daytime, 2 h, 4 km: €35, which is €17.50 an hour or about €8.75 a kilometre.
- Sunset, 2 h, 4 km: €40, which is €20 an hour or €10 a kilometre.
- Extended sunset, 3 h, 7 km: €45, which is €15 an hour or about €6.40 a kilometre.
So the step from daytime to sunset costs €5, and what you buy with it is the wine and the light, on the same 4 km. The step from the 2-hour sunset to the 3-hour one costs another €5 and gives you a whole extra hour and 3 km. DSK describes what the longer tour adds as “extra paddling time” and “more photo breaks”, not an extra stop, so it’s the better value per hour if you like paddling and the weaker deal if you only want the cave.
Two people in a double kayak pay twice: €80 for the 2-hour sunset (about £68 / $90), €90 for the 3-hour one (about £77 / $101). Compare like with like and Adventure Dalmatia’s 2-hour sunset at €45 sits €5 above DSK’s at €40, if it’s a per-person price too, which Adventure Dalmatia doesn’t say. It gives 0.2 l of wine and takes children from 4; DSK gives a glass and takes them from 8.
Morning, midday or sunset
The useful question is which departure you can actually get. Before its booking pause, Adventure Dubrovnik advertised several departures a day, the last being the sunset tour, leaving about 2.5 hours before sunset and ending with wine on return. Adventure Dalmatia asks you to book at least a day ahead so it can confirm the exact departure hour, though the location block on its site lists 09:30 and 12:30. At DSK’s umbrella, be there 15 minutes before the advertised time.
Because the sunset departure is tied to sunset, its clock time slides earlier through the autumn, and the clocks in Croatia go back on 25 October 2026. A time printed for a summer tour isn’t the one for November; take it from the booking page for your date.
Air temperature, per Adventure Dalmatia, runs between 15°C and 38°C depending on the season, and all three sites tell you to bring sunscreen and sunglasses or a hat. Wear the swimsuit under your clothes: DSK has no changing rooms and no toilet at its meeting point, and Adventure Dalmatia says the only toilets are the public ones on Pile Square.
Age, fitness and who is turned away
Rules differ more than prices do, so check the operator’s own site, not the line on a marketplace listing.
- DSK: minimum age 8, and wine is served from 18. DSK lets one child aged 5-7 share a seat between the parents free of charge, yet its “not suitable for” list also names children under 8, so ask in writing before bringing a small one. The same list also names pregnant women, people with back or heart conditions, non-swimmers and non-English speakers. Guests must follow basic instructions, paddle with both arms and keep balance with their legs.
- Adventure Dalmatia: minimum age 4, “a low level of fitness”, no previous experience needed.
- Adventure Dubrovnik: “reasonably fit”, no experience needed, and it lists child-size life vests.
None of the three pages prints a weight limit, so a heavier or taller paddler should ask when booking rather than at the umbrella.
Weather, cancellations and finding the right umbrella
Sea kayaking is weather-led. DSK says its tours depend on sea and weather conditions, and if it cancels for safety you can take a full refund, a free reschedule or a guided walking tour instead. Its terms are stricter on your side: a full refund if you cancel 24 or more hours ahead, nothing inside 24 hours, and nothing for a late arrival, even with a transport delay, and nothing for a guest who doesn’t finish the tour or is sent back early for safety or pacing. Adventure Dalmatia reserves the right to cancel or change the route without notice in bad weather and asks you to book at least a day before.
Then there’s the meeting point, a real problem because Pile bay is crowded with stands. DSK’s is at Brsalje 8 under an orange umbrella, by the local bus stop. Adventure Dubrovnik’s is at Brsalje 5 under a green umbrella, and it says to look for green, not red or orange. Adventure Dalmatia warns that many other companies sell kayak tours in the same bay and tells you to look for the stand with its name.
Pile is the last stop for the city buses. DSK counts about 3.5 km from the cruise port at Gruž, by taxi or local bus lines 1A, 1B or 3, at €2.50 for a ticket bought on the bus (Libertas price list). Late arrival means a missed tour on DSK’s terms, so don’t plan the bus for the last minute.
Lokrum: you paddle past it, landing costs extra
DSK explains why its tour doesn’t land on Lokrum: access to the island needs a separate entrance ticket, which it prices at €30 per person in 2026, nearly the price of its entire tour. The Lokrum Reserve’s own site backs the principle: visitors arriving by private boat, water taxi or other independently arranged transport also have to buy the €30 ticket, and Adventure Dubrovnik says the same for its rented kayaks.
So the sum is simple. A tour plus a landing is the tour fee plus €30 per adult; the reserve charges less for children and students. The reserve’s boat ticket from the Old Port costs the same €30 and includes the crossing, so arriving by kayak saves nothing. The Lokrum island guide covers the timetable, the last boat back and what to do ashore; the kayak is the better way to see the island from outside. The two fit one day: a morning boat to the island, a late-afternoon sunset paddle, and the remaining hours of the one day in Dubrovnik plan around them.
If Pile feels too busy, Adventure Dubrovnik also lists a Cavtat tour, though on 13 October 2026 the company was not accepting bookings. It describes the tour as lower-key, with gentler sea conditions on the sheltered side of the peninsula, and shows “upon request, minimums apply” instead of a price. Our Cavtat guide has the town around it.
Insurance, theirs and yours
All three sites list “insurance” among the inclusions, and none gives the terms, so ask what the cover includes and whether it applies to non-residents. Your own policy is a separate question: sea kayaking is one of the activities that many travel policies treat as “extreme” or exclude, which is why the travel insurance guide tells you to look for your activity by name.
Get these in writing before you pay
- The price per person, and whether the wine is a glass or 0.2 l.
- The departure time on your date, and the last sailing date of the season.
- The umbrella colour and the street number on Brsalje, and how early to arrive.
- What happens if the sea is rough: refund, reschedule or walking tour, and who decides.
- The minimum age on the day and any weight limit.
- What the included insurance covers.
